All-Bisque Dolls
A fun fellow in brown all bisque with a round character face, painted black hair, unusual pierced ears with metal earrings, a swivel neck and toddler body with plump limbs jointed at the shoulders and hips. At the top front of his neck there is a “sluff” in the bisque surface, not a chip, and on his right cheek a small, dark ink mark. There are also some scratch marks from years of being propped in a stand. His original, exotic outfit puts him in the mood of a gypsy or Eastern musician, with his black velvet trousers, silky rust vest and colorful sash, tied in the front.

Made by the J.D. Kestner Company in the early 20th century, the 111 all-bisque Googly offers exceptional poseability, with jointing at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. The only Googly that outperforms it is the alternate Kestner mold number 112, which also features a swivel neck. From the vast Sherryl Shirran Collection, it seems Sherryl was determined to add this doll to her family no matter what, as it includes a replaced upper left arm.
The replaced segment is composition but fits extremely well and does not show under the clothing. This sturdy doll has brown glass sleep eyes, an original blond mohair wig, a stationary neck, and jointing at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, with brown painted and molded shoes. Her coordinating undergarments and cotton dress are all antique. Sitting, standing, or reclining, she is an absolute joy.

In 1919, American doll artist Jeanne Orsini collaborated with the German factory Alt, Beck & Gottschalk to commercially produce her line of cheerful all-bisque dolls. Measuring around 5″ tall, they came in three facial expressions and were named Vivi, Mimi, and Didi. This example is the “Vivi” doll in the 5″ size (the 7″ size is very rare). All dolls in the series were jointed at the shoulders and hips, with the right arm bent and the index finger extended, as seen here.
Her head swivels, and she has brown glass sleep eyes—a desirable feature, as many were made with painted eyes. She is incised with mold code numbers on her back. Her mohair wig may be a replacement, as are her clothes, though both are crafted with antique materials and period-appropriate design. Collecting all three characters together makes for a delightful display!

An exotic, ethnic 3″ bisque baby of fine workmanship by Kestner or Hertwig, presented as an immobile figure seated and secured in an opulent ormolu high chair with a tray that multitasks as a pin cushion. The detail and painting of the face—with blue painted eyes and cadmium red lips—is quite intricate, not to mention the molded white bonnet and molded thigh-length one-piece infant garment. Casually posed legs hide under the tray, while the arms are fully outstretched in a mealtime pose. (Some factory rough spots on the fingers.)
